Where The Light Falls

Light is endlessly variable. It shifts with the time of day, the angle of a lens, the texture of a surface, the pigment in a brushstroke. It can be chased, captured, manipulated, layered and it will still surprise you. Colour is light interpreted: by materials, by surfaces, by the extraordinary complexity of human perception. No two people see it in quite the same way.

The four artists in Where The Light Falls each have a distinct relationship with light and colour in their practice.

William pursues it through the camera, in long exposures that make light itself the subject, and in macro work that finds luminosity in the overlooked.

Erina layers it across mediums, building colour fields in digital work and translating that sensibility into textile and mixed media.

Flaire commands it boldly on wood and canvas, using saturated, surreal colour to map interior worlds.

Mikhael works with it in time, the way a filmmaker controls where the eye travels, what is illuminated in a frame, and what stays just out of reach.

Together their work forms a conversation about what light does: aesthetically, emotionally and in the world. Where the light falls is rarely something we get to choose. What gets seen, what gets noticed, whose work finds its way onto gallery walls: these are not neutral outcomes. They reflect decisions, structures, and assumptions that have historically left many voices in shadow.

This exhibition is, in part, a reclaiming. Each artist has chosen what they want the audience to see: a perspective on the natural world, an interior emotional landscape, a point of view on storytelling, the textures of everyday experience. The work of actually mounting this exhibition, of navigating the real barriers that stand between these artists and a public platform, is itself a form of stepping into the light.

Visibility is what Where The Light Falls is about. Not visibility as a disability issue, but as a human one. We all have things we want seen and things we keep in shadow. Art is one of the few places where that negotiation happens on the artist’s own terms.

By placing light and colour at the centre of the exhibition, rather than disability, Where The Light Falls creates space for audiences to encounter work on its own terms, and to arrive at questions of visibility through the experience of looking, not through a label.
